Touch a Truck, a favorite tradition for families throughout the area, returns the morning of September 27 at the Cleveland County Fairgrounds, 615 E Robinson St, in Norman.

The morning begins with a special “quiet hour” for sensory sensitive children from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., with the event continuing from 10:30 a.m. to 1pm.

Touch a Truck features an up-close look for children and families of about 40 vehicles of all kinds. Representatives from each participating business or organization sponsoring a truck will be available to educate visitors about how their vehicle works and what kinds of services they provide.

We are participating in the 2014 Global Cardboard Challenge, an annual initiative, inspired by the short film "Caine's Arcade," that celebrates the power of creative play and childhood imagination. Last year had 85,559 participants in 46 countries, with hundreds of schools, libraries and community organizations hosting events.

The library hosts Book 'N Cook on Mondays from 4:30PM-5:30PM, starting October 6 for six weeks to November 10, in the Story Time Room of the library, 225 S. Howard Ave.



The program is geared to ages 7 to 12 and combines reading, a movie and a unique recipe or two. Participants will listen to a story, watch a related film and then put together a tasty snack based on the stories they’ve heard and watched.

Supplies are all provided by the library but are limited in number, so registration in advance of the program is required.

The featured guest will be Lilly the mouse, who was made popular through the books of author/illustrator Kevin Henkes, who has written several dozen books about the mouse and many of her friends.

The Open House is a come-and-go program to celebrate reading for area first graders and their families. Guests can take photos with Lilly, make a craft and sample a "cheesy" snack. First graders will also learn more about the programs, activities and library collection for young readers.

Sensory Story Time is an interactive event that can be enjoyed by all children, but is especially designed for children with Sensory Processing Disorder, Autism & other special needs. It combines a book, songs, movement, and activities to engage all five senses in learning. Sensory-friendly aspects include accommodations for seating, lighting, sound, story props / other sensory manipulatives & small group size. This Sensory Story time event will last approximately 30-45 minutes.

Who can attend?: Any child ages 4 to 8 years old can attend with a parent/caregiver.

At the end of the class is a special presentation where children learn a song with dance moves that teaches them what to do if they see a gun.
